Look at me! My fur is sticking up, my paws are damp and I am definitely not looking my wisest.
Even wise cats have bad hair days. Sometimes we wake up feeling grumpy, worried, tired or simply out of sorts.
A difficult day does not mean you are doing badly. It is only one day, and there are things you can do to make it feel a little easier.
1. Stop and Take a slow breath
Breathe in gently through your nose and slowly breathe out. Try this five times. A slower breath tells your body that it can begin to settle.
2. Name how you feel
Try saying, “I feel worried,” “I feel cross,” or “I feel disappointed.” Naming a feeling can make it seem less confusing. Remember that feelings change, even when they feel very strong
3. Do one small thing
You do not have to solve everything at once. Choose one small, helpful action. One small step is still progress.
4. Talk to someone you trust
Tell a parent, carer, teacher or another trusted grown-up how you are feeling. You could simply say, “I am having a difficult day and I need some help.”
5. Move your body
Stretch, walk, dance or shake your arms. Movement can help your body release some of the tension it is holding. Cats prefer stretching, of course.

6. Notice what is going well
Look for three small things that are okay. Perhaps someone smiled at you, you enjoyed your breakfast or you remembered something without being reminded. Small good things still count.
7. Speak kindly to yourself
Speak to yourself as kindly as you would speak to a friend. Try saying, “This is hard, but I can handle the next step,” or “I do not need to be perfect.”
8. Take a quiet break
Find somewhere comfortable and peaceful. Read, draw, listen to music or sit quietly for a few minutes. Taking a break is not giving up.
9. Remember another difficult day
Think about a time when something felt hard but eventually became easier. What helped you then? You may already have more courage than you realise.
Press Enter when finished.
10. Begin again
A bad start does not have to decide the rest of your day. You can pause and begin again at any time. There is no rule saying a fresh start must wait until tomorrow.
Sid’s final thought
Confidence does not mean feeling happy and brave all the time. It means knowing that difficult feelings will pass and that you can take the next helpful step.
So, if today is a bad hair day, be gentle with yourself. Take a breath, smooth down what you can and keep going. Tomorrow, your fur may look magnificent again.
