When Sid was a kitten, he was curious.
Very, very curious.
One sunny afternoon, a bright blue butterfly fluttered past the garden gate.
Flap, flap!
Sid’s whiskers twitched. His ears pricked up. His tail curled like a question mark.
“Wait for me!” he mewed.
He pounced past the flowerpots, out of the garden and along the winding path.
The butterfly bobbed left.
Sid scampered left.
It swooped right.
Sid scampered right.
Then, all at once, the butterfly fluttered away—and Sid stopped.
He looked around.
The trees seemed taller. The path looked twistier. Even the breeze smelled strange.
Where was home?
Sid’s tummy gave a nervous little flip.
Sid was lost.
For a moment, he wanted to dash about, sniffing and searching.
Then he remembered some very wise advice:
“If you’re lost, don’t get more lost.”
So Sid took a slow, deep breath.
He stopped wandering and found a safe, open place where he could be seen. Then he sat quietly, wrapped his tail around his paws and waited for help.
Before long, a kind person spotted him.
Because Sid was properly identified, his family could be contacted. Soon, he was back home, safe and sound—with a warm cuddle, a bowl of supper and a very important story to tell.
From that day on, Sid never forgot what he had learned.
Sid’s 5 Lost Rules
🐾 STOP – don’t keep wandering.
🐾 STAY somewhere safe and easy to see.
🐾 LOOK for a safe grown-up who can help.
🐾 KNOW your grown-up’s name and, if you can, their phone number.
🐾 DON’T GO somewhere else with a stranger.
These rules aren’t only for kittens.
They’re useful for young humans too.
